About Monchique Natural Park

Monchique Natural Park, located in the western Algarve region of southern Portugal, encompasses the Serra de Monchique mountain range, the highest in the Algarve. Established to protect its unique ecology and rural heritage, the park covers approximately 100 square kilometers of predominantly forested hills and valleys. The park's varied geography includes granite outcrops, lush cork oak and eucalyptus woodlands, thermal springs, and panoramic viewpoints such as Foia, the Algarve's highest peak at 902 meters. Monchique’s mild Mediterranean climate supports an assortment of flora and fauna, including endemic species and populations of foxes, wild boar, and diverse birdlife like Bonelli’s eagles and blue rock thrushes. Rich in cultural heritage, the park includes traditional villages such as Monchique and Caldas de Monchique, famous for their historic architecture, artisan crafts, and mineral water springs. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy well-marked trails for hiking and mountain biking, exploring shaded paths through chestnut and umbrella pine forests, scented by wild herbs like rosemary and lavender. The park’s accessibility from nearby coastal resorts and its balance of nature and culture appeal to those seeking both adventure and tranquility. Visitors can also indulge in local gastronomy, including honey and regional cheeses, enhancing the authentic experience in this protected natural and cultural landscape.
